HOW TO FORGIVE

Learning how to forgive, is key to your spiritual growth, and your communion with God.

Romans 12:9-14 in the New American Standard Bible (NASB) says:

"9 Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor; 11 not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; 12 rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer, 13 contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality.

14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse."

This passage from the Bible emphasizes the importance of genuine love, compassion, and kindness among believers. It encourages Christians to love sincerely, avoid evil, and hold onto goodness. This passage also promotes unity within our community, urging us to care for one another and to maintain devotion to God through prayer and service. The final verse advises blessing those who persecute you rather than seeking revenge.

We always welcome you to pray and worship with us on stream. Let's dive a bit deeper into this lesson at the 1-hour 47-minute mark in the video below:

Forgiving someone is a deeply personal and often challenging process, but it is important for several reasons, particularly from a Biblical perspective:

1. Biblical Teaching: Forgiveness is a fundamental teaching found in the scriptures. Jesus emphasized forgiveness in his teachings and even forgave those who crucified him. We are encouraged to follow this example.

2. Emotional Healing: Forgiveness brings emotional healing. When you forgive, you release feelings of anger, resentment, and bitterness, which can be toxic to your emotional and spiritual well-being. Forgiveness allows you to move on from the pain and find inner peace.

3. Spiritual Growth: Forgiveness is seen as a way to grow spiritually. It reflects a willingness to emulate the love and mercy of God. By forgiving, we strive to become more Christ-like in character.

4. Reconciliation: Forgiveness can pave the way for reconciliation with the person who hurt you. While reconciliation isn't always possible, forgiveness can create the conditions for rebuilding trust and relationships.

5. Liberation from Grudges: Holding onto grudges can be mentally, physically, and spiritually harmful. It can lead to stress, anxiety, and spiritual burden. Forgiving frees you from the burden of resentment and promotes a healthier relationship with God and those around you.

6. Fulfillment of Christian Duty: Forgiving is not just a choice but a duty. It's a way of obeying God's commandments to love one another and to forgive as God forgives us.

To forgive someone:

1. Acknowledge Your Feelings: It's important to acknowledge the hurt, anger, and pain caused by the person's actions. Recognize that these feelings are valid.

2. Choose to Forgive: Forgiveness is a conscious choice. Decide to let go of your desire for revenge or ill will toward the person.

3. Pray or Seek Guidance: Pray for the strength to forgive or to seek guidance from your local Christian community or spiritual leaders.

4. Release Resentment: Let go of the negative emotions associated with the offense. This may take time, and it doesn't mean you condone or forget the wrongdoing. Let go and let God.

5. Set Boundaries: If necessary, establish healthy boundaries to protect yourself from further harm while still maintaining a forgiving attitude.

6. Be Patient: Forgiveness is a process, and it may require ongoing effort. Be patient with yourself as you work through your feelings. Let the Spirit guide you and comfort you through prayer and worship.

In summary, forgiveness is essential for emotional healing, spiritual growth, and following the teachings of Jesus. It allows individuals to let go of negative emotions, fosters reconciliation and promotes a healthier and more fulfilling life in Christ.
