The Gift of Silence

Silence is good for the soul.

It took me a while to fall in love with silence. At first, it was uncomfortable—unnerving, even. But now I’ve come to cherish it.
The Bible reminds us of this truth. “Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalm 46:10) And again in Habakkuk: “The Lord is in His holy temple; let all the earth be silent before Him.” Even in Revelation, we read of silence in heaven for about half an hour. That’s no accident. Silence holds weight.
It may sound simple, but learning to be silent before God has been one of the most powerful keys in my spiritual walk. It’s in that quiet place that we become aware—truly aware—of His presence. But I get it… silence can be scary. It confronts us. It peels back the noise of our daily lives and forces us to face what’s underneath: anxiety, agitation, even fear.
But here's the truth: silence doesn't break us, it heals us.
Think about it—many of the saints in the Old and New Testaments didn’t have music or fancy worship sets. Yet they were people of deep prayer and great power. They knew how to access the presence of God. Sometimes, music can help. But other times, it can stir the soul so much that it drowns out the quiet whisper of the Spirit.
Today, I want to encourage you: don’t run from the silence. Lean into it. Let it do its good work. Write your heart—Silence is good for the soul.
Take a step toward that quiet place today.
